When breast cancer patient Melanie Zander asked me to help her reproduce the painting "Boy with Apple" from the movie Grand Hotel Budapest, I was thrilled! Melanie had just realized that her regrowing hair was now just about the length of those of the infamous character and since she was a big fan of the movie, she really did not want to miss that opportunity!
Throughout her first episode of cancer, Melanie has been a real model to all of us around her because of how she's tackled the disease: she's tried to make the best out of each and every step of the process. Oh so much can be said about all the clever, original, fun and interesting ways Melanie has "enjoyed" fighting cancer.
Sadly, last December, the crab struck back on Melanie, but faithful to herself, she is still living her life to the fullest. Melanie is a tremendous inspiration for me, and for all the people who know her I am sure. And this is what I wanted to represent in our latest work together, the Green Fairy shoot. La Fée verte (green fairy) was the nickname given to 'Absinth', a potent alcoholic green drink, very popular among artists in Paris a century ago, because of its "inspirational" properties...
Melanie, or Musanie as we have been calling you lately, I admire and love you so much! I will always cherish this portrait of you and will look at it each time life throws a rock at me... I'm sure you will help me turn it into an emerald!!!
There is still so many more grandiose moments coming your way. Like a firework, I am enjoying watching your beautiful, powerful and energizing grand Finale. Your beautiful life. Your legendary life.
PS: The little stick Melanie is holding is her last minute genius' idea: a symbole of the Morphine she has been inhaling lately to help her cope with the pain of the metastases plaguing her spine.
